01

What needlestick cover protects against

Needlestick cover pays a benefit if you become infected with occupationally acquired HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, following an accident that occurs in the course of your work. It's a benefit typically available to clinical occupations most exposed to this risk dentists, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals and different insurers structure it differently.

Depending on the insurer, needlestick cover might be included as a built-in benefit of a broader trauma policy, offered as an extra-cost option, folded into income protection cover, or arranged as a genuine stand-alone policy. The exact wording, and what's included, is set out in each insurer's Product Disclosure Statement and can vary depending on when your cover commenced.

02

What's covered

Beyond a straightforward needle injury, cover can extend to exposure through other routes common in clinical settings sharps accidents, splash-back onto broken skin or mucous membranes, and inhalation of blood or bone dust during procedures.

03

Common exclusions

Cover generally excludes infection arising from causes other than an occupational accident for example sexual activity, intravenous drug use, or tattooing. Always read the relevant PDS for the precise wording that applies to your policy.

Worth knowing

What insurers typically require to pay a claim

Most policies require the exposure incident to be reported in line with your profession's exposure-prone procedure guidelines for example through AHPRA, the relevant medical board, or your hospital's credentialing committee and confirmed by negative test results taken within a set window, commonly seven days, of the incident.
