01Why life insurance matters
Life insurance sometimes called death cover or term life insurance — pays a lump sum to the people who rely on you if you pass away, or in most policies, if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness. It's one of the simplest, most direct ways to make sure your family isn't left to sell the house, change schools or take on debt at the worst possible time.
Life insurance is defined and regulated under the Life Insurance Act 1995 and the Insurance Contracts Act 1984. Every insurer we work with issues a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) that sets out the exact terms of the cover and every policy differs slightly, which is exactly why getting the structure right matters.
02How it works
Your policy pays the sum insured as a lump sum to your estate, your policy owner, or a nominated beneficiary. Many policies also include a terminal illness benefit at no extra cost, paying out early if you're diagnosed with a life-limiting illness we only arrange cover that includes this as standard.
03How much cover is enough?
What would it cost to clear your mortgage and other debts?
Would there be enough for funeral costs and other immediate expenses?
What future costs should be planned for school fees, university, retirement savings for a surviving partner?
How much capital would your family need to maintain their lifestyle, and for how long?
There's no single right answer it depends on your debts, your dependants and your goals. That's exactly what we help you work through.
Nobody buying a home wants to think about what happens if they can't work. But that's exactly why we ask the question for them.
